Tonsils function by preventing germs in your gut from causing infections in your trachea that can be disastrous. However, a recurring or occasional inflammation of tonsils caused by their infection can be quite unbearable. There are a number of home remedies that can be explored to help you or your child. The following are tonsillitis causes, symptoms and their cures decoded to help you alleviate and prevent this infection.
Tonsillitis can result from bacterial and viral infections. There are a couple viruses known to cause tonsillitis. The enteroviruses, Epstein-Barr virus, Influenza and parainfluenza viruses, Herpes simplex and the adenoviruses. Through a bacterial infection, the known causing agent is the Streptococcus.
These causing agents make the tonsils to swell with some cases even blocking the airway due to inflammation. This can be felt in throat pains, redness along with whitening or yellowing on the tonsils’ surface, loss of appetite, ear pains, headache, pain when swallowing, a bad breath and even vomiting in kids. Breathing through the mouth can also be painful.
Treatment by Doctor
To effectively treat tonsillitis, establishing the cause is crucial. In home remedies, we cover alleviating the symptoms and pain, but curing goes beyond that. Knowing the nature of the infection, whether bacterial of viral, will involve a throat swab by the doctor for a specimen. The specimen will be tested for bacteria. A negative result for streptococcus bacteria in the specimen will be assumed to be viral because the latter is untraceable in bacterial tests.
Bacterial infections are the more common of the two infections and require a prescribed dosage unlike the viral one that is easily fought by the body. For bacterial infections, a ten-day antibiotic dosage is given. 2-3 days into the dose, patients normally start to feel well and some stop taking the pills. However, it is advisable to complete the dose to prevent reoccurrence and the need to use a stronger antibiotic.
